What would happen if West Kilbride had a traffic warden 5 days a week?

We're always talking about traffic and parking issues here in West Kilbride - and writing about it! Did you see the recent letter in the Largs & Millport Weekly News titled "West Kilbride Traffic Warden"?

The writer had a suggestion for North Ayrshire Council: If a traffic warden was based in WK five days of the week, the revenue from fines for parking on double yellow lines, parallel parking and exceeding speed limits on the A78 through West Kilbride could easily clear the council's £12m deficit.

Why do we have such a problem with these issues?

Norman Stewart says

It raises a far more important issue - are the double yellow lines in West Kilbride legal ? A recent influx of traffic wardens did not appear to raise any revenue as tickets issued currently should be returned as void since the road markings do not comply with statutory requirements. The residents of WK should familiarise themselves with what constitutes a legal road marking and signage. A recent study of the markings in Main Street indicate none of them meet the legal requirement. Such markings must be maintained, not broken, have proper signage all which must meet statutory regulations. The council will have to pay out large sums to rectify this before hoping to make any gain. Traffic Wardens are supposed to be trained and not issue invalid tickets where markings do not comply. As far as I see, they only issue tickets for other offences.

James Campbell says

It's strange how motorists are always the first targets for public fund raising. Speed limits, yellow lines and wardens are meant to be safety considerations - not fund raisers. West Kilbride is a shambles. Because there are not enough official parking spaces people are forced to park on yellow lines. I have said before we need a full scale one way system with permitted parking on one side of the one way street. By the way I understand that if you have an accident while parked on a yellow line your insurance company will not pay up. Check your small print! James Campbell
