Public meeting re proposed Coal fired power station at Humterston

by Betty Stanger

Around 130 people attended the public meeting on Monday 28th in the Village Hall where they heard from Ben Murray, author of Power of Scotland Renewed Report, that it was a myth that there is an energy gap in Scotland and the statement that the lights will go out if this station is not built is untrue.

Sophie from Coal Action Scotland spoke about the health problems arising from coal dust and waste products. Aeden Smith of RSPB spoke of the effects on the bird population and on the SSI site in the area. He also stated that the issue was complicated by the fact that the power station had been included in the National Planning Framework without consultation and that there was a judicial review taking place at the present time regarding this.

CONCH representatives spoke of the size of the development proposed and the effects on the road and rail infrastucture. The meeting was open to the public to ask questions and give their views. There were many interesting points made.

There were also stalls from various organisitions and model letters of objection were available from these organisation and from CONCH.

The meeting demonstrated that there is considerable opposition to this development and eveyone was encouraged to get involved in opposing it.

Michael Guest says

In support of the clear opposition to this proposed new Power Station at Hunterston. North Ayshire and Scotland in general maybe interested to know there are in fact deep concerns within Whitehall over the unproven technology needed to opperate such a Power Station.   The Government are proposing four of these new Power Stations, why propose to build four experiemental sites, when one would be enough to prove if the concept will actually work with no damage to the eviroment. Given this, plus the serious financial position the UK finds its self in, surely such expenditure of is highly questionable to say the lest!

I would suggest, the proposed Hunterston development be rejected as part of the Government's funding cuts in order to get the nations finances back into the black. I strongly agree with the comments and concerns in both Scotland and Whitehall, and fully support a firm rejection at Hunterston on grounds of enviroment, unproven technology and public finances.

Clearly we do not need four experimental sites, and we certainly do NOT need one at Hunterston!
