Public meeting re proposed Coal fired power station at Humterston
Around 130 people attended the public meeting on Monday 28th in the Village Hall where they heard from Ben Murray, author of Power of Scotland Renewed Report, that it was a myth that there is an energy gap in Scotland and the statement that the lights will go out if this station is not built is untrue.
Sophie from Coal Action Scotland spoke about the health problems arising from coal dust and waste products. Aeden Smith of RSPB spoke of the effects on the bird population and on the SSI site in the area. He also stated that the issue was complicated by the fact that the power station had been included in the National Planning Framework without consultation and that there was a judicial review taking place at the present time regarding this.
CONCH representatives spoke of the size of the development proposed and the effects on the road and rail infrastucture. The meeting was open to the public to ask questions and give their views. There were many interesting points made.
There were also stalls from various organisitions and model letters of objection were available from these organisation and from CONCH.
The meeting demonstrated that there is considerable opposition to this development and eveyone was encouraged to get involved in opposing it.
