Planning process to build a coal-fired power station at Hunterston gets underway
16 MarchPeel Energy Ltd, which owns Ayrshire Power, wants to create the £3 billion coal-fired station with experimental carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology on the site.
If the power station gets the go-ahead - on land between the existing Clydeport coal-handling facility at the Hunterston Terminal and the Hunterston B nuclear power plant - it could power three million homes and the plant would be the first of its kind in the UK.
However, environmentalists are campaigning against the plans, claiming it sends the wrong message about Scotland's energy future.
