Kirktonhall group call for view on West Kilbride building

  • Kirktonholme as it is today
  • And a view of the building back in 2008

The Kirktonhall Business Centre Group in West Kilbirde is exploring the possibility of acquiring ownership of the building and bringing it back into use.

As part of this process, the Group wishes to understand the views of residents, community group members, and business owners (in West Kilbride and the surrounding areas) on the value that they place on this historic building, the benefits of bringing it back into use, potential uses, and the level of support for its redevelopment.

Last Sept. NAC estimated £200,000 would be required to preserve the fabric of Kirktonhall.

The people of West Kilbride are being asked what should be done with the building. My preference would be to see NAC demolish it thus opening up the town centre.............Ivor Roscoe

Douglas Brown says

I’m told that when the Council placed the property on the market some time ago it failed to sell for an asking price of £100,000. So, the Council is now inviting proposals from local groups for bring the building into beneficial use in a way that will not jeopardize the activities at the other West Kilbride community facilites, namely the Community Centre, the Village Hall and the Barony Centre. But even if this challenging condition is met, and there is no overlap, there will be even more competition within West Kilbride for success with fundraising from increasingly strapped public and charitable trust funds. It would be better if the future of Kirkton Hall was secured using private capital for an established demand, and this means housing. There have been sceptical comments made about the building practicalities and economic merits of retaining the building shell and completely reconfiguring the internals to produce apartments, and I am not qualified to challenge the sceptics. But the matter should be professionally examined again by the Council, taking a drastically reduced selling price to a private developer as an assumption, at the same time as the current EKOS consultancy study is being carried out for the Business Centre Group. With the gardens and parking space alongside Kirkton Hall, it is an attractive concept that would avoid the potential for overcapacity in the provision of quasi-public buildings.
